Globalisation is transforming societies. Social policies aim to adjust to these evolutions by improving the citizens’ access to quality services, and demonstrating solidarity with those who are affected negatively by these changes.

The course is dedicated to social and labour market policies in the European Union. It begins with a discussion of EU-level competences in social policy and a description of the globalization process. This is followed by a presentation of (i) contemporary issues in welfare policy and (ii) EU labour and social policies. After having analysed how globalization may impact labour and social policies in Europe and generate European social changes, the course will close with a discussion of the role of globalization in the future of social and labour market policies in Europe.
